Former Glentoran and Portadown midfielder will add 'real bite' to Glenavon

Glenavon manager Michael O’Connor insists former Portadown midfielder Jack Henderson is a “very welcome addition” to the Lurgan Blues after joining from Annagh United.

Henderson, who has also spent time on the books of Glentoran, Bangor and Ballymena United alongside a spell in America, played 33 matches in the Championship for Annagh last season as they narrowly missed out on promotion in a play-off defeat to Crusaders.

The 25-year-old represented Annagh in two Premiership play-offs having also featured in both legs of their 8-3 aggregate loss to Carrick Rangers 12 months prior.

Henderson has significant Championship experience – he has played 85 times in Northern Ireland’s second-tier across clubs and was nominated for NIFWA Championship Player of the Year last term alongside Stephen Lowry and John Butcher of Limavady United.

He has also racked up a further 51 career appearances in the Premiership – the first of which came for Glentoran in February 2019.

Glenavon currently sit fourth after putting together a three-game unbeaten run following their opening day 3-1 defeat to Ards and boss O’Connor is confident Henderson can make an impact at Mourneview Park.

“Jack is a very welcome addition to our midfield options,” he told the club’s website. “He’s played over 100 games and has a lot of experience both at Championship and Premiership level.

“Jack is a very combative midfielder and he’ll give us a real bite.

"We’ve lost a couple of players in there in recent weeks with injuries and Ben Wilson’s move to Brentford so it was vital that we filled that void.

"I’m also excited to see the energy and quality Jack will contribute to the team.”

O’Connor has reshaped his squad after a number of summer arrivals and exits following Glenavon’s Premiership relegation.

Henderson joins Mark Patton, Brandon Doyle, Ethan Devine, Deaglan Healy, Ryan Waide, Peter Maguire, Lorcan Donnelly, Jude Johnson and Alex Watson as a new signing at the Lurgan Blues.

Glenavon have also confirmed the departure of Matthew Allen to Dollingstown in a permanent transfer.
