Former Linfield youngster hailed as 'technically efficient, creative player' after signing new Aston Villa contract
Former Linfield youngster Cole Brannigan has been hailed as “a technically efficient, creative player” after signing a contract extension at Premier League giants Aston Villa.
Brannigan made the move to England in 2023 after progressing through the Blues’ academy and has been a standout performer for Villa’s youth teams.
The Northern Ireland youth international scored 11 goals and provided three assists in 15 U18 Premier League matches last term.
Brannigan also netted in the FA Youth Cup final as Villa defeated Manchester City and has already made a step up to U21 level, playing 10 times in Premier League 2 this term.

The 18-year-old underwent hand surgery in December but has made a successful return to action, scoring and assisting for Villa’s U21s in a 4-3 defeat to Newcastle United last month.
Brannigan signed his first professional contract at Villa Park in 2024 and has now been rewarded with a fresh extension.
Villa’s Academy Manager Mark Harrison said: “We are delighted to see Cole sign an extension to his contract.
“He was a key performer in the Under-18s last season, and played a significant part in their success with his goals and assists.
“He is a technically efficient, creative player who links and combines the game well.
“We look forward to seeing how he develops over the coming seasons.”
The Belfast teenager has had an opportunity to train with Villa’s senior stars, including the likes of England international Ollie Watkins and World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez.
Speaking to the News Letter after making his Premier League 2 debut last year, Brannigan stated his desire to keep pushing for more as he looks to make his professional dream a reality.
"I don't really reflect very much on what has happened so far, I like to keep level-headed and focused,” he said. “It was such a surreal moment (making PL2 debut).
"I had made my debut in the EFL Trophy and being with the squad was amazing. To play in Premier League Two...that was my target for the season and I've new targets now that I want to achieve.
"To be told that you're being offered a professional contract is amazing. It's life-changing.
"I want to keep pushing and who knows what can happen? There's no time to waste - every day is a chance to get better.
"When I'm on the pitch it's 'let's go' and this is why I'm here...you just have to take that opportunity.”
