Gavin Whyte backed to get ‘fans off their sofas’ at Hull

The 24-year-old winger arrives on loan from Cardiff City with Hull boss Grant McCann confident Whyte can add “pace, energy and directness” to his League One side.

“He likes to get the ball and run at people,” McCann, a former Northern Ireland international, told the official Hull City website. “He’s a full international and had a good time in Northern Ireland, a really good time at Oxford and followed that up with a move to Cardiff.

“We’ve been searching for a replacement for Hakeeb Adelakun and he will bring real pace and directness to the front three.

“We’re delighted to get him and there was a lot of competition for him.

“We’re delighted he’s chosen us and he’ll get the fans off their sofas because he’s direct and likes to get at people.”

Whyte left Irish League side Crusaders in 2018 to join Oxford before nine goals in 47 appearances persuaded Cardiff to bring the playmaker on board for a seven-figure fee.

The Belfast-born ace played 30 times last season in Cardiff’s run to the Championship play-offs.

Bolstered by his progress at international level, Whyte will be hoping to hit the ground running with the Tigers once international clearance arrives on the loan until the end of the current campaign.

Whyte will now team up at club level in Hull City colours with international forward colleague Josh Magennis.
