'He's probably top of the list': Why Rodney McAree was delighted to see Dungannon Swifts winner fall to 'great footballer'

Dungannon Swifts manager Rodney McAree was full of praise for “great footballer” Adam Glenny after his spectacular volley secured a 2-1 Premiership victory over Ballymena United.

The Swifts full-back showed superb technique to smash home an effort from 25 yards and moved Dungannon into fifth spot, continuing what has been a fine run for the Co Tyrone club.

Only leaders Larne (23) have picked up more points across the last 10 league matches played by each top-flight team than Dungannon (21).

Here’s what McAree had to say after the match:

THOUGHTS ON THAT?

"I thought we started the game really well. I thought we were in control of the game for the first 10-15 minutes at least.

"We went 1-0 up and had good control of the game, but whenever we conceded the goal that we did, we seemed to lose all control of it after that, for the remainder of the first half.

"Not that you felt as if you were under massive pressure or that you were making a number of saves, that wasn't happening, but we felt as if we were losing grip of the game and we needed to get in at half-time and reassess and go again.

"We asked them to control it a little bit more, don't be as direct as what we were, because we're not a direct side, but sometimes the pitch lends itself to that.

"We went out at the start of the second half and we controlled it a little bit better, and we got a fantastic goal from Adam Glenny. We maybe don't deserve to win it, we maybe haven’t created an awful pile.

"I know the keeper made a great save from Adam Glenny's header as well, but outside of that we didn't really create an awful pile, so to get the three points off the strike that it was is massively rewarding.”

LACK OF COMMUNICATION FOR BALLYMENA’S GOAL?

"I think Cahal (McGinty) just needs to take responsibility, he needs to make his own mind up.

"He was disappointed down this touchline because Leo (Alves) is tracking Success (Edogun) and he decides to go and double up with Adam Glenny on the man on the touchline who wasn't any threat, and he left Success to get to the byline and flash the ball across.

"So that could have been prevented, and then Cahal has to take responsibility – I think Cahal was just looking a hat-trick to be honest!”

IT WAS GOING TO TAKE SOMETHING SPECIAL TO WIN IT – GREAT STRIKE FROM ADAM?

"It was, and it's great to find him in that position because it's a ball into the box and as the opposite full-back he's went and hung on the edge of the 18-yard box and thankfully it's come out to him.

"If there's anybody really you want it to come out to, it’s probably Adam Glenny. He's one of the ones at the top of the list that you'd like to see it land on because technically he's a great footballer and it's a great strike.

"Cahal scores the first one, Adam scores the second one, we win 2-1 and none of our forwards weighed in with a goal...it's nice to see them coming from different areas.”

WE TALK A LOT ABOUT HOME FORM, BUT TWO WINS NOW AT BALLYMENA THIS SEASON?

"Yeah, and it’s not an easy place to come, especially whenever there's been the rain that there has been over these past few days.

"I thought Sean McAllister typified how we did today – the shift he put in was fantastic.”

TRYING NOW TO KEEP THIS GOOD RUN GOING?

"If we could turn some of the defeats that we've had into the odd draw here and there, it would give us another few points.

"We haven't drew a game all season, we've either won or we've lost, so I think that's nine wins and nine defeats.

"So if we could turn some of the defeats into draws, it would maybe make us even better, but we're delighted with the way it's going at the moment.”
