The Bannsiders’ leading scorer, who broke the deadlock in the 3-0 win at The Showgrounds, sustained the injury in an awkward fall in the second half.

“Broken collarbone and surgery needed, not the best start to the new year but the goals don’t change,” Doherty tweeted after the game.

There was a big boost for Coleraine boss Oran Kearney though as key defender Aaron Canning returned to action.

Canning looked to be on his way out of the club after being placed on the transfer list in the summer, but Kearney says he has earned his recall.

“I think we’re all delighted to see Aaron back,” said Kearney.

“It’s one which has been a journey for us all I suppose more than anything else.

“At this point in time, the key thing is he has earned his shot at being back.

“There’s nobody doubting his qualities and what he brings to us as a team.

“I think along with everybody else I am delighted to see him back.”

There was also bad news on the injury front for Dungannon Swifts as Dylan King was ruled out for the season after sustaining an ACL injury.
