Irish League call for COVID-19 funding rapid release to protect clubs

Glentoran chairman Stephen Henderson has called for a rapid release of sport’s £15m COVID-19 support package following the latest NI Executive lockdown extension.

Stormont ministers have confirmed a decision to implement a further two-week circuit breaker from November 27 - with restrictions to now include a ban on spectators at elite sporting events.

With Irish League football falling under the elite classification, Danske Bank Premiership clubs have had the benefit of limited crowds at fixtures since the start of the season on October 16.

However, the latest circuit breaker restrictions freeze non-elite sport and ban spectators at elite events in a move that will further increase the financial strain on club revenue. The Northern Ireland Football League and Irish Football Association both confirmed plans to meet on Friday in the aftermath of the NI Executive announcement.

Henderson is hoping for the distribution of vital financial aid to now get the green light “sooner rather than later”.

“Irish League football has, overall, acted extremely responsibly in providing our fans with the chance to attend live sport and enjoy the benefits, societally and in terms of mental wellbeing,” said Henderson. “I have been extremely impressed by the work of our clubs led, in the main, by volunteers.

“But we must adhere of course to the NI Executive measures and abide by those regulations officials consider required to reduce the infection rate, so football will continue to play its part.

“However, with behind-closed-doors fixtures now in place the need is greater than ever for the release of financial support.

“It must come sooner rather than later as this move only serves to increase the risk to the future of our clubs.

“To play behind-closed-doors games will be a bitter blow given the steps taken by clubs to ensure a safe environment.”

Henderson’s Glentoran are scheduled to face Larne in the Co Antrim Shield final on December 2 at Seaview.

“We know from our Irish Cup experience the benefits of playing big games in front of even limited crowds,” said Henderson. “It is such a significant occasion for both clubs and football without fans is nothing.

“Although the decision rests with the Co Antrim FA competition officials, certainly I would be open to discussions over a postponement of the final until after the New Year, if it increased the chances of supporters being able to attend.”
