Irish League club appoint new manager who will bring 'fresh energy and forward-thinking approach'

Irish League outfit Portstewart have confirmed the appointment of John Gregg as their new manager – believing he will bring “fresh energy and a forward-thinking approach”.

Gregg spent the majority of his playing career in the Irish League, enjoying spells at the likes of Coleraine, Ballymena United and Cliftonville, before moving into management at Institute.

He has also held coaching positions at Coleraine, Glentoran and most recently served on Rodney McAree’s backroom staff at Dungannon Swifts, helping the Co Tyrone club seal historic Irish Cup glory last term.

Gregg is now returning to the hotseat at Premier Intermediate League outfit Portstewart, replacing Mo Mahon, who resigned earlier this month and was then named Strabane Athletic manager.

The Seahawks currently sit sixth in Northern Ireland’s third-tier and Gregg’s first match will come in Saturday’s home clash against high-flying Moyola Park.

"We’re thrilled to announce that John Gregg has been appointed as the new First-Team Manager of Portstewart FC,” the club posted. “John has a broad and impressive background in Northern Irish football — both as a player and as a coach.

"His experience includes playing in the Irish League with clubs such as Ballymena United, Cliftonville & Coleraine FC and later building a strong reputation working in youth development.

“He’s widely recognised for his commitment to nurturing young talent and helping players progress into senior football. During his time as Head of Youth Development at Coleraine FC, he earned praise for his coaching and mentorship qualities.

"John arrives with fresh energy, a forward-thinking approach, and a strong sense of player development. We believe his leadership will help us grow on the pitch.”

Gregg worked with McAree during their time at Glentoran before joining him in Dungannon and the Stangmore Park outfit thanked their former coach for his service.

"We would like to say a massive thank you to John Gregg for his dedication and commitment during his time at Dungannon Swifts as part of our backroom staff,” the club said. “John joined the club in May 2024, becoming a key part of the back room staff that helped guide the Swifts to an unforgettable Irish Cup victory and a fantastic journey into European football.

"His professionalism, passion, and positive influence around the club will always be appreciated.

“We wish John all the best for his new managerial position at Portstewart FC and we wish his family all the very best for the future, thank you for everything you brought to Stangmore Park.”
