Irish League legend hailed as 'proven winner' after taking on manager job at Amateur League club
Irish League legend William ‘Winkie’ Murphy has been appointed as manager of Amateur League outfit Albert Foundry ahead of next season with his “passion, leadership and clear vision” backed to help club progression.
Murphy enjoyed a decorated playing career, winning nine Premiership titles and seven Irish Cups – amongst a host of other honours – during a trophy-laden Linfield spell.
Centre-back Murphy made 639 appearances for the Blues and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2025, recognising his years of service to the Windsor Park club.
Murphy also enjoyed spells at Ards and Glenavon, winning a further Irish Cup with the Lurgan Blues before calling time on his career in 2015.

He moved into coaching with Coleraine shortly after his retirement, serving as long-time assistant manager to Oran Kearney and also worked alongside Rodney McAree.
After nine years on the Bannsiders backroom staff, Murphy departed his role at The Showgrounds in June 2024.
Murphy is now set for a return to the dugout after Albert Foundry, who play in NAFL Division 1A, confirmed he’ll “get to work as soon as the current season ends”.
In a statement, the Belfast club said: “Everyone at Albert Foundry FC is delighted to confirm the appointment of Winkie Murphy as the club’s new first team manager.
“Winkie joins the club bringing passion, leadership and a clear vision for the future as we look to build on the strong foundations already in place.
"Known for his strong mentality and winning attitude, Winkie has built a reputation as someone who demands high standards and always looks to drive his teams forward.
"A natural competitor and proven winner, Winkie’s approach to the game is built on hard work, determination and a desire to succeed.
"The club believes his experience, leadership and winning mentality will play a key role both on and off the pitch as the team continues to grow and compete.
“Winkie and his backroom staff who will be confirmed at a later date will get to work as soon as the current season ends.
“Everyone at our club wishes the new set up the best of luck and are excited as to what the future holds.”
