Irish League teenager 'taking the next step' with switch to Scottish Premiership senior set-up
Teenager Paul McGovern is relishing ‘taking the next step’ following his move from the Irish League to Scottish Premiership.
Eight goals in 35 league games across Glenavon’s ultimately unsuccessful fight to avoid top-flight relegation last season led to interest from a number of clubs for the promising 18-year-old prospect – with McGovern highlighting Falkirk’s “proven record of developing young talent” following completion of the deal.
“I am delighted to be joining Falkirk,” said McGovern on the official club website. “I had good options in England and Scotland but I believe Falkirk is the right choice for me at this stage in my career.
“The most important thing was progressing as a player.

"Falkirk, under John McGlynn, has a proven record of developing young talent, you only have to look at the young players they have developed in recent seasons.
“I’ve played a lot of games for Glenavon and now it’s about taking the next step.
"I feel Falkirk can help me reach that next level and I’m excited to push on under the manager and his team.”
The Northern Ireland youth international and Newry City AFC product clocked up over 60 appearances for the Lurgan Blues following his 2024 move to Glenavon and leaves as domestic football’s ‘Ulster Young Player of the Year’.
“Paul is an attacking player who can play across all front positions,” said McGlynn on the official club website. “He is a young player with huge potential and he is highly thought of within the international set-up.
"We have been tracking Paul for some time and have beaten many Scottish and English top-level clubs to get his signature.
“It was nice to meet his mum and dad, along with his agent, at our home game against Motherwell in the top-six split when they visited us to take a look at our club.
"They were very impressed with the atmosphere the fans created and I’m sure that played a part in Paul’s decision.
"I’m sure we will all make Paul very welcome when pre-season training gets underway and we start playing games.
“I would like to thank Glenavon, who have been great to work with and have done a wonderful job coaching Paul to such a high standard.”
A Glenavon statement highlighted: “Paul follows in the footsteps of so many talented Glenavon youngsters that have earned moves across the water.
“From Mark Sykes to Shayne Lavery to Josh Gracey to Chris Atherton, the club has a proud reputation of giving young players a platform to shine and Paul is the latest young talent to earn a high-profile move.
“We wish Paul and his family nothing but the best and we hope he goes on excel in the next stage of his career with Falkirk.
“We would like to express our thanks to Falkirk for the professional manner in which they conducted themselves throughout negotiations.”
McGovern has signed a three-year deal with Falkirk – with The Bairns closing out the last Scottish Premiership campaign bottom of the post-split Group A table.
