Linfield in line for financial boost after Northern Ireland star completes Luton Town transfer

Northern Ireland international Callum Marshall has highlighted the role played by ex-Arsenal star Jack Wilshere in his permanent move from West Ham United to Luton Town - declaring “I think he should be good for my career”.

After four years on the books of West Ham following his switch to London from Linfield in 2022, Marshall has now signed a long-term contract at Luton with the League One outfit agreeing an undisclosed fee – the Blues are in line to benefit financially from a sell-on clause.

Marshall starred for Huddersfield Town during his previous stint in England’s third tier – he was named their Player of the Year after scoring nine goals and providing three assists in 43 league matches throughout a successful loan.

The 21-year-old, who has earned 16 Northern Ireland caps, has now joined Wilshere’s Luton in search of senior minutes.

Former England international Wilshere was appointed as Hatters boss in October and Marshall has revealed the 34-year-old was key in his final decision.

“It feels great to get the deal done,” Marshall told the club’s website. “I think that Luton are heading in the right direction and all the meetings I’ve had with Jack and the coaching staff, they’ve really made me feel wanted and I like what I’ve been told.

“I played against him when he was Arsenal 18s coach and that was one of the big drawing points to Luton as well, the fact that Jack’s here.

"I think he should be good for my career, and he’s a manager I want to work under, so hopefully it goes well this season and we all get what we want.

“I want to be playing regularly, feeling part of something as a team, like we’re going somewhere. So I think this is a great next step for my career and hopefully I can push on.

“People around me, like my agent and my dad – people I would speak to for advice – they say, ‘You need to belong somewhere’.

"Whenever you are a loan player, it’s difficult because you’re not their player. I’m used to going somewhere as a visitor for a year.

“So coming here permanently, this is my home now and hopefully I can get settled off the pitch as well as on it.”

Wilshere revealed Luton fought off significant competition to secure Marshall’s services – and predicts he can make an impact.

“From the first moment I met Callum I knew how hungry he was for success,” said Wilshere. “Naturally, a lot of other clubs were in for him, so we’re pleased that he’s chosen us and that we’re a club that’s matching his ambition and vice-versa.

“Callum’s someone that suits us, not just in terms of quality but also his mentality.

"He’s a bit old school in that way. He wants to get stuck in and help the team and set off the pressing – and I think he’ll take to having fans close to the pitch at Kenilworth Road.

“He’s had a look round Kenilworth Road and loved it. I was the same as a player, it’s really important to understand your environment. Now he’s really feeling it and we’re looking forward to seeing him out there in a Luton shirt.”
