Seventeen matches, 17 victories – Amateur League club Taughmonagh YM are remarkably on the brink of winning the Division 2B title without dropping a single point in their first-ever season at this level.

The Newforge Lane outfit have picked up the maximum 51 points available to them so far this season and with only five games left to play, including Saturday’s trip to Carryduff Colts, they’ve opened up an 18-point gap at the summit.

In the process of putting together this astonishing run, Barry Lavery’s men have scored 85 goals and conceded only 17, and after coming within two matches of completing a flawless Division 2C campaign on their way to the title last term, Taughmonagh are hoping to write another chapter into the club’s history books.

Striker Robbie Hoy has netted 39 times in 28 appearances across all competitions this season, including 24 in 15 league outings, and found the net in 13 of his last 14 matches – the only blemish was when he had to be substituted in the first-half against Tullymore Swifts due to a hamstring injury.

With most of the squad living in Taughmonagh, Hoy admits it’s extra special achieving significant success alongside friends.

"It has been a special season,” he said. “After getting beat in the (Cochrane Corry) cup final last year our whole focus was on getting ourselves into 2A after getting promotion. To be where we are now having won 17 consecutive matches is a great achievement.

"We always knew we could take that step and we're confident that we can go up again and again because we've a very strong team.

"We were two games away from it last year and were really focused on it. It's the last thing we have to play for this year so we're really going for it. Coming so close last season does give us that extra motivation to do it this time around.

"It's something we all want to do and it would be a great achievement to win every single league match. There are some big games left and we're just focused on getting into 2A.

"I don't know how often something like that would have happened before but it would be some achievement - it would be unbelievable.”

It has been another memorable campaign on a personal note for Hoy, who scored 37 goals last season, and he wants to keep pushing up the leagues to continue challenging himself.

"I scored 37 last season so I set a target of 40 for myself this season and I'm one away with a few games to go,” he added. “I've enjoyed stepping up another level. It's something you take in your stride and I'm happy to still be scoring goals.

"I like to see there are some hat-tricks in there as well and not just one per game! It's a good streak I'm on at the minute."

Taughmonagh are an ambitious club and having excelled in their first season in 2B – which will only be a fleeting visit – they’re determined to tick off more milestones and push further up the Amateur League pyramid.

"This is the highest we've ever been,” said Hoy. “Winning 2C last season was the first amateur title that Taughmonagh have ever won. We've already written our names into the history books and there's more to write.

"We want to go up as many leagues as we can while we have this squad together. It's an unbelievable set of players and it's so good to be around it. Every player fights for their position and for each other.

"The success helps keep everybody together and the more leagues you go up, the more you can attract more players too. I think the set of players we have right now would be more than capable of going up through the leagues. We want to test ourselves against the better teams."
