Michael O'Connor reveals Glenavon have completed first January transfer with 'still one or two that are maybes'
Glenavon manager Michael O’Connor has revealed the Lurgan Blues have completed their first signing ahead of the January transfer window with an announcement imminent – and insists he’ll be working “non-stop” to improve his squad next month.
The Mourneview Park outfit remain six points adrift at the bottom of the Premiership table following a Boxing Day defeat to rivals Portadown, but will look to continue their impressive home form when Dungannon Swifts visit on Tuesday evening.
O’Connor has previously spoken about his desire to conduct early business in January with a view to signing “three or four, maybe more” in a bid to bolster Glenavon’s survival hopes.
The former Northern Ireland international admits the first deal has already been finalised and the search for further recruits is set to continue until the final moments of January.

"We’ve got one coming in, that should be announced in the next day or so,” O’Connor told the club’s media channel. “There’s still one or two that are maybes.
"We’re going to be working hard behind the scenes to get players in and give us that squad where everyone is pushing each other...we’ll be non-stop over the next three or four weeks, until the window closes, to get players in that will improve Glenavon.”
Since O’Connor’s appointment in October, Glenavon have won four of their last five home matches, including against reigning league champions Linfield, to breathe new life into their mission of preserving top-flight status.
They remain without a point on the road, losing 12 consecutive games, but will hope to make the most of home comforts with three of their next four – including an Irish Cup fifth round showdown against Newington – being staged in Lurgan.
"We go into every game hoping to get a result and believe we can,” he added. “We’ve been really good at home this year, played on the front foot.
"Rodney (McAree) has got Dungannon playing really well, they’re a team I enjoy watching. We will go in with the belief that we can get three points and get a good performance.
"We need to control what we can do, we can’t keep looking at Crusaders, Carrick or whoever else is above us – if we just look after ourselves then we’ll be alright.”
O’Connor received an injury boost on Friday as Stephen Mallon continued to work his way back to full fitness by playing the final 15 minutes at Shamrock Park.
"I thought Stevie was really good when he came on,” said O’Connor. “He has been chomping at the bit over the last two or three weeks and he seems to be getting fitter with every session we do.
"He looked like he wanted to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and it’s good to have him back.
"If you look at our bench, it’s probably the strongest we’ve had since I came in so it’s good we’re getting bodies back.
"Peter Campbell isn’t far away so it’s looking good in that department.”
