Davey’s afternoon at the Oval also featured red cards for Crusaders players Jordan Forsythe and Gerard Doherty plus manager Stephen Baxter - the latter two following the final whistle - as Glentoran turned the tables on a half-time deficit to record the 2-1 victory.

Marcus Kane had cancelled out Jamie McGonigle’s first-half goal and the tie appeared on course for extra-time when a penalty was awarded in the closing minutes following Robbie McDaid’s cross and what was viewed by the match officials as handball from O’Rourke in his attempt to cut out the delivery.

McDaid stepped up to convert the subsequent spot-kick on 87 minutes and send Glentoran into the semi-finals.

Davey spoke to the press after the tie to explain his thinking behind each major decision.

“I was not 100 per cent sure, although I thought it (the ball) struck a hand,” said Davey. “My gut reaction was a handball straight away.

“My assistant was blocked by the player who crossed the ball (McDaid).

“He told me he wasn’t 100 per cent, so we both opted for a corner-kick – I made the decision too quickly.

“The fourth official then intervened and said it was ‘hands for me’.

“I asked him was he sure? He said ‘100 per cent’.

“The players’ reactions also indicated to me it was a handball.”

Davey also explained his reasons for the three red cards, adding: “Although Jordan was booked earlier, it was a straight red for him for violent conduct for a push on a ballboy.

“There were bottles that came in from the crowd, but the goalkeeper (Doherty) shouldn’t have reacted the way he did.

“That’s why he was sent off, for throwing back the bottle.

“The manager’s dismissal was for confrontation on the field of play.

“They will all be recorded in my match report.”
