Thirty years after his last visit to the STATSports SuperCupNI, one of the tournament’s most famous graduates is returning with his own band of aspiring young footballers in 2021.

Former Leicester City and Derby County midfielder Robbie Savage has confirmed that his Pro Football Academy U15s will take their place in the Junior section next summer.

Savage of course was part of that famous Manchester United side that defeated Heart of Midlothian in the U16 decider in 1991 at the Coleraine Showgrounds when the tournament was formerly known as the Milk Cup.

Pro Football Academy is one of the most progressive youth football academies in England and despite only being formed in 2015, the club has already provided an exciting pathway for young players at a grassroots level to attract the attention of English League clubs.

Over 100 Pro Football Academy players have gone on to sign contracts with professional clubs across England and Pro Football Academy regularly take on the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City.

Former Welsh international Savage is now heavily involved in the coaching staff at Pro Football Academy and the Wrexham native has fond memories of his last trip to the tournament.

“I was so proud to feature in the 1991 Milk Cup competition with Manchester United and I was even more fortunate to win the Tournament,” he said.

“A few years ago I was so proud to see my own son Charlie play in the competition for Manchester United.”

Savage, whose teammates back in 1991 included Beckham, Scholes, Gary Neville and Nicky Butt, said his U15 side are counting the days until they participate in the competition next summer.

He added: “We cannot wait for the competition and we are really looking forward to it and we can’t wait to meet all the wonderful people who organise the STATSports SuperCupNI next summer.”

The 2021 STATSports SuperCupNI will take place from Monday, July 26 through to Friday, July 30, with the traditional parade of teams and welcome ceremony at the Coleraine Showgrounds to take place on Sunday, July 25.

The Premier and Junior Section Cup Finals will take place at Ballymena Showgrounds.
