The sense of community pride driving both managers ahead of Irish Cup final
A sense of community pride has provided Coleraine manager Ruaidhri Higgins with extra motivation for Saturday’s Irish Cup final showdown against defending champions Dungannon Swifts, declaring “the last person you think about on occasions like this is yourself”.
The Co Londonderry town has turned blue and white this week as the Bannsiders prepare for their first trip to the biggest stage in Northern Irish club football since 2018.
A lot has changed at The Showgrounds in that eight-year period – ambitious Henry Ross has taken over and Coleraine are now one of four full-time teams operating in the Irish League – but something which has remained constant is the club’s fierce support.
With thousands embarking on a weekend journey from Coleraine to Windsor Park hoping to see Higgins’ first season end on a silverware high, the manager’s thoughts focus on collective gains over personal accomplishments.

"It gives you enormous pride that the community and the town are really supporting what's going on at the club,” said Higgins, who also played for Coleraine. “I know there's new ownership, but it's local and I think that really helps
"There's a real positive feel around the club. You drive through the town every day, just flags everywhere, it's special and it gives you a real sense of pride
"There's a huge responsibility that comes with that as well.
"The last person you think about on occasions like this is yourself, you just want to make other people happy and proud of their team and that's our job going into the final.”
Dungannon manager Rodney McAree grew up as a member of the Swifts community, following the team while father Joe held a variety of roles, before cementing legendary status for himself.
It was clear the impact last season’s historic triumph had on the Co Tyrone town – and McAree is determined to deliver once again.
"I live less than a mile away from the ground, I'm there every day,” he said. "It means a great deal and it's brilliant to be involved in it.
"After winning it last year, it just gives you a taste that you want to win more and you want to be involved in these occasions more and more.
"It's exceptional that we've now a second one to look forward to.”
