WATCH: Minute's applause in Belfast tribute to Northern Ireland and Manchester United icon George Best for 20th anniversary
Northern Ireland sporting icon George Best was celebrated in Belfast with a minute’s applause to honour the forthcoming 20th anniversary of his death.
Players and officials from Northern Ireland and Luxembourg joined in with supporters inside the Clearer Twist National Stadium at Windsor Park before Monday’s final World Cup qualifying game to pay tribute.
The match marked the closest senior international to the anniversary of Best’s death on November 25, 2005 at the age of 59 years old.
Best finished his international career with nine goals in 37 caps, with a glittering club career most recognised for achievements at Manchester United during which he won two English league titles and the European Cup along with a string of individual plaudits across the 1960s.
Belfast-born Best was hailed as a genius of the game, considered one of the greatest in football history.
