Barry Ferguson has admitted that he was taken aback by the length of the ban handed to Rangers duo George Edmundson and Jordan Jones by the Scottish FA.

The Ibrox pair were each suspended for seven games earlier this week after breaching Covid-19 regulations by attending a gathering with people outside of their respective households last month.

Both players were immediately suspended by the Gers pending an internal investigation, but will now be out of action until at least December 30th following the governing body’s intervention.

And Ferguson has suggested that the punishment a little on the harsh side.

Writing in his column for the Daily Record, the former Ibrox midfielder said: "Of course George Edmundson and Jordan Jones won’t feature [against Aberdeen on Sunday] after being given their seven-game bans.

“Gerrard has dealt really well with the situation. I’m sure he’d be more disappointed than angry with the two players.

“Who’s not made a mistake in life? These guys have now paid for their mistake.

“I was taken aback by the length of the ban, it was a bit OTT. I thought it might be three games with a couple suspended.

“But it’s done now. Rangers have handled the situation really well and it’s up to the players, when the time allows, to get their heads down and work their way back into the manager’s plans.”

Between them, Edmundson and Jones have registered just 274 minutes of action for Rangers this season, with the former still yet to make an appearance in the Scottish Premiership after slipping down the pecking order in Glasgow.
