Scott Arfield had fired Gers ahead but the hosts played on the visitors’ nerves to claim the win thanks to late goals from Stephen O’Donnell and Eamonn Brophy

“It was a bad performance,” said Gerrard. “We never coped with the pressure in the second-half. We just couldn’t handle the heat.

“The reality is we’ve not been good enough since the winter break and I’m responsible for that. I’m responsible for the team selection and the tactics.”

Gerrard vowed to keep on fighting despite the herculean task that now confronts his side as they sit ten points behind leaders Celtic.

He said: “We’ll move on and keep fighting – but on the evidence of the second-half it’s very worrying.

“I though we had enough based on the first six months of the season but right now it’s looking extremely tough, I had every belief and confidence in my squad.

“We came here tonight in a pressure game – and the reality is we couldn’t cope with it. We’ve let ourselves down and we’ve let the supporters down.”

Celtic boss Neil Lennon is refuring to take anything for granted though.

“We have a tough game on Sunday at Pittodrie. We are taking absolutely nothing for granted,” he said after their 5-0 win over Hearts.

“The players know there is a long way to go and there will be twist and turns as we go along.”
