Spain hit five past brave Northern Ireland Ladies

Northern Ireland U17 ladies lost 5-0 to current European champions Spain at Solitude on Thursday.

But the local players gave their all and the3 scoreline flattered their opponents.

Spain had the first chance of the game as Daniela Diaz had a shot well blocked by Chloe Orr when it looked like the Spanish would go ahead inside two minutes .

Spain could have gone ahead after a superb ball from Paula Fernandez found Laura Gutierrez but she was denied by Lauren Currie who was quick out to claim the loose ball at the Spanish strikers feet .

The visitors however did take the lead on eleven minutes as a neat one two between Daniela Diaz and Nerea Elizaguirre saw the latter get in to calmly slot the ball home to give Maria Antonias side the lead.

Spain were pressing and pressing the home defence with slick one twos, and this worked again as they went two ahead as Ezliaguirre got on the end of a pass from Lucia Rodriquez and she stuck the ball high into the net albeit via a deflection .

Lauren Currie then had to be alert on 19 minutes as Rodriquez cut inside of the right her shot well saved by the Northern Ireland keeper.

Spain however did go three ahead as Rodriquez whipped in a sublime cross for Gutierrez she flicked a header onto the front post, the flight of the ball deceiving the keeper beating her in the process.

Spain started the second half like a house on fire as they went 4-0 ahead through half-time substitute Lorena Navarro who flicked home with her first touch.

Spain did have their fifth on 72 minutes as Navarro got on the end of an Andújar cross to fire the ball home past the superb Currie who had no chance of saving it.

Alison Nicholl’s side were starting to tire but they kept on fighting as Currie made another good save as her side were getting hit by wave after wave of attacks as Andújar made a fantastic driving run from halfway but her shot was well dealt with by Currie who was Northern Ireland’s best player on the day.

And Currie was having a fantastic afternoon in the home goal as she made a wonderful save from Leyre Monentes low drive from the edge of the area.

This was how the game finished but the home side will have gained vital experience.
