Steven Davis hails Gareth McAuley as defender commits future to Northern Ireland
McAuley had been contemplating retiring from international football following this summer’s European Championship finals in France.
Fortunately for Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill, the 36-year-old has decided to carry on into another qualifying campaign – which kicks-off against the Czech Republic on September 4.

The West Brom defender was also a pivotal figure as Northern Ireland topped their Euro qualifying group – scoring three goals as O’Neill’s men finished top of their pool.
“I am delighted that ‘Big G’ has decided to stay on. It is a massive boost for us,” said skipper Davis.
“He had a big decision to make after the Euros. He has been a big player for Northern Ireland over the last few years, so to have him on board for the World Cup qualifiers is great for us.

“We obviously lost Chris Baird who retired from international football last week, and there are other players who might be considering their own futures.
“So it was important we kept a player like Gareth McAuley in the squad.
“His experience and leadership qualities will be very important when we head into what is a very difficult World Cup qualifying group.”
