McIlroy was out once again alongside pre-tournament favourite Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele after shooting a one-under par 71 during the first round.

However, a mixture of bogeys and a double-bogey seriously harmed McIlroy’s chances as he just about finished above the cut line at +4.

HOLE ONE: McIlroy’s opening drive lands in the fairway bunker. The 34-year-old is able to play out of the sand to find the green. A birdie putt never looked likely of finding the bottom of the cup as he saves a four. PAR.

HOLE TWO: Yet again another tee-shot by McIlroy goes awry into the bunker. McIlroy is forced to lay-up as he finds the green in four stokes on the par 5. A birdie attempt fails to find the cup as yet another birdie opportunity ends without a 4 on McIlroy’s scorecard. PAR.

HOLE THREE: More problems off the tee for McIlroy as his ball clatters off a tree. Luckily, it lands on the fairway but his approach is nowhere near the hole on the par 4. A birdie attempt sails harmlessly beyond the hole, but crucially, McIlroy saves a four via a testing putt up the hill which should give him some confidence. PAR.

HOLE FOUR: McIlroy's approach to the par 3 lands nowhere near the green as it gets caught in the wind, according to the Sky Sports commentary. McIlroy is then forced to chip the ball onto the putting surface as he makes another vital save for a 3. PAR.

HOLE FIVE: A poor drive and third shot puts McIlroy in a sea of trouble at the back of the green at the par 4. A great pitch limited the damage of potentially carding a 6 but Rory ends up back at level par. BOGEY.

HOLE SIX: An 8-iron by McIlroy holds up in the wind as the ball fails to find the putting surface. Rory would have to work hard yet again to not drop any more shots as he saves a 3 via a good chip from the edge of the green. PAR.

HOLE SEVEN: A great tee-shot puts McIlroy in contention to do damage at the par 4. Rory shouts “go” as soon as he makes contact with the ball but it doesn’t listen as it finds the greenside bunker. More pain would ensure for McIlroy thereafter as he is unable to get up and down as a 5 is pencilled in on the scorecard to go +1. BOGEY

HOLE EIGHT: McIlroy may have wished he brought his bucket and spade as his tee-shot at the par 5 found the bunker. This meant the Holywood man would have to play out. An 8-iron approach would find the back of the green. McIlroy was unable to sink his putt for a 4. PAR.

HOLE NINE: A round of applause from the patrons for McIlroy as his tee-shot on the par 4 lands in the middle of the fairway. An approach into the green is labelled “beautiful” by Butch Harmon on Sky Sports. However, McIlroy was walking towards the hole before his birdie attempt even stopped as he has to settle for a 4. PAR.

HOLE TEN: A great drive means McIlroy is 177 yards from the pin. Butch Harmon beams with delight at Rory’s second as it lands with 10ft of the pin. However, there would be no joy with the birdie putt. PAR.

HOLE ELEVEN: A lengthy drive has McIlroy well down the fairway but his second into the green hits the water as the wind continues to pick up. A chip and run leaves a testing putt for bogey which McIlroy misses as he moves to +3. DOUBLE BOGEY.

HOLE TWELVE: The famous par 3 would see McIlroy send his iron to the back of the green. A chip-out would hit the pin but McIlroy is able to save his 3. PAR.

HOLE THIRTEEN: A drive and iron sees McIlroy laying up at the par 5. A chip onto the green fails to land close as Rory has a sarcastic smile on his face. A birdie putt goes within another roll of finding the cup. PAR.

HOLE FOURTEEN: McIlroy’s tee-shot was wide left into the trees but he managed to get the ball out to the back of the green. A chip leaves a test for par which he misses to go +4. BOGEY.

HOLE FIVETEEN: The par 5 would once again see McIlroy lay-up after two shots. However, the short chip into the green failed to stay on the putting surface. McIlroy was able to get up and down for his 5. PAR.

HOLE SIXTEEN: Paul McGinley hails “a great shot” by McIlroy as he finds the par 3 green with a superb iron. Unfortunately, there still wouldn’t be a birdie on his card as his attempt slips by the hole. PAR.

HOLE SEVENTEEN: McIlroy shouts “fore right” after his tee-shot, with his second then finding the bunker. With the cut-line projected at +5 or +6, Rory can ill-afford to make any mistakes but he salvages a 4. PAR.

HOLE EIGHTEEN: A horrible tee-shot by McIlroy goes far right but he gets a break and is able to hit to the side of the green. Thankfully, he is able to salvage a par and finish +4 with a great putt. PAR.
