The Malaysia tournament test featured India taking the lead off Ramandeep Singh’s opening effort before a composed finish from Shane O’Donoghue left it level.

Amit Rohidas’ penalty corner drag found the net to hand India control for the second time.

However, a strong second-half display by Ireland resulted in a welcome win against the side ranked sixth in the World standings.

Sean Murray’s close-range finish and a Lee Cole effort off O’Donoghue’s drag put Ireland on a 3-2 tally.

The sides are set to tussle again on Saturday for the fifth-place play-off meeting.

Ireland had previously lost out in the cup to the hosts, Argentina, England and Australia.
