ICE HOCKEY: David Rutherford joins Belfast Giants

The Stena Line Belfast Giants have confirmed the signing of Canadian forward, David Rutherford. The 28 year old joins the Giants from the Edinburgh Capitals, averaging one point per game so far in the 2015/16 Elite League season.

The Giants interrupted a move for Rutherford to the ECHL in North America in order to add the Canadian forward to the roster for the remainder of the season. A teammate of Michael Forney in 2014 with the Arizona Sundogs, Rutherford has posted 16 goals and 16 assists, good for 32 points in 32 games played to date this season.

Rutherford, a Central Hockey League all-star, has experience of winning silverware - helping his teams win the CHL Championship in 2011 as well as the ECHL Kelly Cup in 2012.

Steve Thornton, Giants Hockey Operations Manager: “When the opportunity came up to bring David Rutherford to Belfast - the decision was pretty simple. He has put up good numbers already with Edinburgh and I know our fans will love having him in a Giants jersey.

“David has won championships before and he will play a huge part down the stretch this season as we challenge for silverware.”

Rutherford will be available to play from Wednesday’s Challenge Cup Quarter Final 1st Leg in Manchester and will make his Giants home debut in a double header against the Coventry Blaze as The SSE Arena, Belfast hosts back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday, January 22 and 23.
