Kids urged to give City of Derry Triathlon a '˜TRY'

There's nothing worse than sitting on the sidelines and longing to join in but not able to because you are deemed '˜not old enough'!

Don’t worry, that won’t be the case for the young people in and around the City of Londonderry as, in the run up to the fourth annual firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon, children and teenagers aged 8 – 15 have the opportunity to take part in the firmus energy ‘TRYathlon’ on 12 June. Just like the adult event, the ‘TRYathlon’, which takes place in the Templemore Sports Centre, includes running, cycling and swimming activities.

Organisers, which include Derry City and Strabane District Council, North West Triathlon Club and firmus energy, are calling for parents to bring their kids along on the day to let budding sports fanatics have a ‘Try’.

Thomas McCallion, TRYathlon Race Director from Derry City and Strabane District Council, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for children to try something new and of course make lots of new friends. We have had a tremendous response to our TRYathlon with individuals and young people from youth groups, clubs, schools all taking part and joining in the fun.”

All events are open to children aged 8-15 years with various distances for each group, which are as follows; Primary 8-11 years, Secondary A 11-13 years and Secondary B 14-15 years. There are 3 separate events that kids can choose from namely TRYathlon (Swim-Bike-Run) Duathlon (Run-Bike-Run) Aquathon (Swim-Run).

Angeline Murphy, from firmus energy, added: “If any families are looking for something different to do to help encourage their children to get active, this definitely fits the bill! The TRYathlon is a great way for kids to have a go at a variety of sports and to get a taste of what triathlons are all about. It is light-hearted and non-competitive and we would encourage as many young people as possible from the local community to come out and ‘TRY’ something.”

The firmus energy TRYathlon will take place at the Templemore Sports Complex on Sunday 12 June, and children are being asked to come to the centre between 8.45am and 9.15am to get ready with the first events beginning 9.45am.
