Les Jones Memorial 10K set for Mary Peters Track

The event – in memory of British team manager Les who promoted many world class meetings at the venue – has produced memorable contests during the years.

Brendan Teer has dominated the race recently but may be a non-starter due to injury.

However, there will still be an abundance of talent.

David O’Flaherty came second last year with Neil Weir third, Marc Jennings fifth and Greg Lucy sixth and they will all be in contention.

One very interesting competitor is ultra-mountain specialist Eoin Lennon who runs for Carnethy in Scotland.

He came second in the Mourne Skyline Run and set a record for the Glencoe Mountain Marathon.

Former cross country silver medallist Deane Fisher, Kris Wilson, Martin Willcox and brothers Paul and Richard Rodgers will go well along with Bernard Brady and Martin Southwood.

Geraldine Quigley, third last time behind Teresa Duffy and Denise Logue can win the Ladies. She placed second in the Ballynahinch 10K.

Diane Watson, Lyndsey Tyro, Sinead Murtagh, Gillian Logan and Ruth Perioli will place highly while former Junior champion SarahJane Beattie now running for Athletics East Australia will be worth watching.

The competitors start on the track then cover Upper Malone, towpath, Barnetts Park and Queens Playing Fields before returning to finish on the track.

The family kilometre is at 6.30pm with the 10K at 7.30pm.

“My instinct is that we need to settle upon a principle that if an athlete starts their international career competing for a particular country, they finish their career for a particular country,” he said.
