McDowell finishes fifth behind Adam Scott at Honda Classic

Adam Scott banished any doubts about how he would cope without the long putter which helped him become number one in the world with victory in the Honda Classic on Sunday.

Scott carded a closing 70 at PGA National to finish nine under par, one shot ahead of playing partner Sergio Garcia, who was left to rue dropped shots on the 16th and 17th in his 71.

American duo Blayne Barber and Justin Thomas shared third place on five under, with Graeme McDowell a shot further back in fifth after a closing 69.

The Portrush golfer finished the tournament on four under par and secured a place in next week’s WGC-Cadillac Championship.

Over on the European Tour, Cormac Sharvin, making his first tour start, carded a final round 72 to finish in a tie for 52nd.

The Ardglass golfer was 15 shots behind the winner, 2010 Open Champion, Louis Oosthuizen.
