McLean, who is back in action after a 14-month injury lay-off following a crash at the Tandragee 100 in 2019, was only three tenths down on pacesetter Liam Delves.

The Tobermore man always planned to contest the Superstock 600 series this year to complement his road racing programme after doing a deal with Binch Racing to ride a Yamaha R6 under the Ugly & Co. sponsorship banner.

McLean was also set to continue riding for the Cookstown-based McAdoo Racing team on the roads this year until the Covid-19 pandemic effectively wiped out the whole Irish calendar.

A number of Northern Ireland riders took part in the test at Silverstone, including Simon Reid, who was 10th fastest, with Eugene McManus 13th and Sam Laffins slotting into 15th on the combined times after five sessions on Friday.

Isle of Man TT star John McGuinness was also on track as he prepares to contest the Ducati Performance TriOptions Cup. The 48-year-old was ninth quickest in the class.

An official BSB test is scheduled for Donington Park on July 27 ahead of the opening round of the 2020 calendar at the same circuit from August 7-9.
