In an update on social media on Thursday, his partner Tamara said the 49-year-old was showing ‘positive developments’.

Saiger, a popular competitor at the North West 200, Isle of Man TT and Macau Grand Prix, was placed into an induced coma following the incident at the Austrian circuit, which has been blamed on an issue with his brakes.

The statement on Facebook said: “There are some positive developments so they slowly get Horst out of deep sleep again. But there is also a lot of worries and a lot of patience needed... He also has at least two major surgeries left. Nevertheless, there is still a hope that he will be well again. We firmly believe in it!

“Your support helps a lot and we would like to thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts. We are overwhelmed by the huge sympathy! The many positive thoughts and well wishes from all over the world made us totally touched and very happy. Thank you, Merci, Grazie and Thank you!!”
