Walderstown road races in July cancelled due to coronavirus

The ‘Race of the South’ was due to have taken place from July 11-12.

Last month’s announcement from Motorcycling Ireland – the sport’s governing body in the Republic of Ireland – said that all events ‘are cancelled for the foreseeable future’, effectively leaving clubs with no choice other than to call their events off.

Michael Halpin, chairman of the Fore Club, said in a statement: “Following confirmation from our governing body Motorcycling Ireland (SC), advising that ‘all events are cancelled for the foreseeable future,’ we have taken the decision to cancel the Race of the South at Walderstown in 2020.

“We are all very disappointed but we understand it’s in everyone’s best interests. We will be back bigger and better in 2021.”

The Kells and Cork meetings in June have already been cancelled, with Skerries and Faugheen in July also called off.

In Northern Ireland, the Cookstown 100 has been postponed, with the organisers looking at running the event on new dates in September.

The Tandragee 100 and North West 200 have also been postponed, although no alternative dates for either event this year have been suggested.

The Covid-19 outbreak has also led to the cancellation of the Isle of Man TT and Southern 100, although the Classic TT and Manx Grand Prix in September/October remain on for now.
