MOTORSPORT: Kris Meeke honoured with ANICC award

The Dungannon driver, who is at home for a week before he leaves for Sweden for the next round of the FIA World Rally Championship, collected the ANICC 2015 Motorsport Award in recognition of his outstanding performance at the top level of rallying, which is the third time that he has picked up the prestigious award.

“This time it is really special and I would encourage the young competitors here to not give up,” Meeke said.

“I came from the grassroots of the sport in Northern Ireland and as I look around the I see drivers who beat me in the various disciplines on the way up.”

On his path to competing in the World Rally Championship he competed in every discipline of the sport with the exception of hillclimbing and no doubt at some point in his career he will take that challenge.

Meeke went on to say that his confidence was given a major boost when he signed the there year contract with Citroen and that he is looking forward to this season as he mixes development of the new car for 2017 with a limited programme of rallies.

Amongst the many other awards, winners included Seamus Morris (Sprint Champion), Derek McGarrity (Stage Rally Champion), Pat McAleer (Lifetime Achievement) and Jake Byrne (Northern Ireland Formula Ford Champion), who will defend his title in 2016 and will also take part in the British Formula Ford Championship.

Meanwhile, Dungannon Motor Club will be getting their new year off to a busy start on Wednesday with an open night in Dungannon Rugby Club at 7.30pm,

This is a great chance for anyone to come along, have a chat with the organisers and competitors and gain an insight into the club.

This will be followed up with the club’s Rally Navigation School, which is a four-week course beginning Wednesday 10th February at 7.30 p.m.  

The course will be preparing the students for the clubs upcoming Snowdrop Rally on March 11 and will be concentrating on the basics of navigation, timing and map reading.
