Retro Rewind: Ian Hutchinson's famous five at 2010 Isle of Man TT

Riding for Clive Pagett’s Honda team, Hutchinson was in the form of his life as he lit up the Mountain Course in 2010 with victories in the Superbike, Superstock, Senior and both Supersport races to secure his place in the history books.

To win one race at the most challenging road race in the world takes some doing, never mind going through the card to win every solo race on the programme.

And he didn’t get it easy.

Three of the Bingley man’s victories were achieved by a winning margin of less than four seconds, with Guy Martin, Ryan Farquhar and Michael Dunlop pushing Hutchinson all the way to the wire in the Supersport A, Superstock and Supersport B races respectively.

He only just held off Dunlop to win the second Supersport race by 1.45 seconds after a final push over the Mountain on the last lap, while Hutchinson also pulled out all the stops to deny Farquhar in the Superstock event, shattering the lap record with a speed of 130.741mph on his final lap to grasp victory by a mere 1.3 seconds.

His task in the Superbike and Senior races was made slightly easier when John McGuinness failed to finish twice on the HM Plant Honda.

In the Superbike race, Manxman Conor Cummins was out in front on the McAdoo Kawasaki until machine problems thwarted his bid for a dream win at his home event.

There was more drama to come in the blue riband Senior, when Guy Martin came off at the fast Ballagarey right-hander at the start of lap three, with his Wilson Craig Honda exploding in a fireball. Martin somehow escaped serious injury, but tragically New Zealand’s Paul Dobbs had not been so lucky when he was killed in a crash at the same spot 24 hours earlier.

As a result of Martin’s crash, the Senior race was red-flagged for the first time and a restart was scheduled over four laps.

The luckless Cummins crashed at the Verandah on lap two and with McGuinness reported as touring at Glen Helen on the same lap, Hutchinson was left clear in the lead from Keith Amor (HM Plant Honda) and Ryan Farquhar, who had earlier broken down on his Kawasaki.

Scotsman Amor, though, was also ruled out of the race with a problem, leaving Farquhar to clinch the runner-up spot in the finale to race week – 37 seconds behind Hutchinson – with Bruce Anstey in third on the Relentless TAS Suzuki.

Hutchinson, who had surpassed Phillip McCallen’s 1996 record of four wins in a week, said: “I’ll never complain again if I break down on the Isle of Man. Luck was on our side this week.

“Some people say I’m not very emotional, but I’m not going to dance around naked or anything!

“I’m just speechless. It’s awesome and it’s unbelievable to have done it,” he added.

“Clive and the team have built me brilliant bikes and the fans were waving me around the circuit out there like I’ve never seen before.

“To be the first rider to win five races in a week just leaves me speechless.”

Hutchinson’s record still stands, although Ballymoney man Dunlop went close to equalling the feat in 2013.

Dunlop won the Superbike, Superstock and both Supersport races to set himself up for a tilt at a five-timer of his own going into the Senior.

However, his Honda Legends team-mate, John McGuinness, emerged on top after a gripping battle with his younger rival in the six-lap showpiece seven years ago.

Hutchinson, who also won at the North West 200 in the Supersport class in 2010, finished the major international roads season with a hat-trick at the Ulster Grand Prix at Dundrod.

Sadly, a golden year for the 30-year-old ended in disaster when Hutchinson suffered a career-threatening leg injury in a crash at Silverstone in the British Supersport Championship.

Against all odds, he battled his way back to return to the top step of the rostrum at the TT in 2015, when he won both Supersport races and the Superstock event.

His most recent victories at the TT came in 2017, when he won the Superbike and Superstock races to move onto 16 wins in all.

In April, it was announced that Hutchinson had signed a deal to ride a BMW S1000RR for TAS Racing this season.
