Carl Frampton and Michael Conlan summer bouts ‘still possible’

Legendary promoter Bob Arum has refused to rule out the prospect of Belfast’s Carl Frampton and Michael Conlan fighting for world titles in the summer.

Frampton was set to clash with Jamel Herring in a super-featherweight world title bout in June, whilst Conlan was pencilled in for a contest in August.

Each fight was mooted to be staged outdoors in Belfast until the coronavirus pandemic brought sport to a standstill.

However, Arum said: “Were going to do these fights. The question is on which side of the Atlantic they take place.

“We’ve been talking to the participants of those fights and we want to do them - the question is where can we do them and how are we going to do them?

“We would like, if we can, to do them in Belfast, but with this virus we don’t know when we would be able to do that with spectators,” he added.

“It’s not ideal but the choice at the moment comes down to fighting without spectators or not fighting at all.”

Frampton (33) – who is bidding to become a three-weight world champion – believes his match-up with Herring is a done deal, albeit without yet being officially confirmed.

Conlan had been due to fight on St Patrick’s Day at Madison Squad Garden in New York City against Belmar Preciado until the Covid-19 outbreak led to the fight being ruled out.

The contest was expected to have been the unbeaten 28-year-old’s final fight before a world title shot.
