On Tuesday, Herring’s scheduled defence against Jonathan Oquendo of Puerto Rico was called off after the champion tested positive for Covid-19.

In a Tweet, Arum said he hoped Frampton and Herring would return to the ring in August.

“If they’re both victorious, we will attempt to match them against each other in the fourth quarter of 2020,” he said.

“We were greatly saddened when Jamel Herring tested positive for Covid-19.

“We expect not only him back in the ring in August, but also Carl Frampton.”

Belfast star Frampton - who beat Tyler McCreary when he last fought in November 2019 - is expected to fight behind closed doors this summer.

He was previously due to fight 34-year-old Herring in June before the Covid-19 pandemic thwarted the contest.

Herring also tested positive for coronavirus on June 22.

Earlier this week, he said: “I quarantined and recovered as directed by my doctor. I then retested on 3 July and my test was negative, so this result is a complete surprise.”
