Turkington led the championship going into the final round at the Kent circuit but the 38-year-old’s results of ninth, fourth and ninth ultimately cost him the crown, with Sutton (Infiniti Racing) emerging victorious by 14 points overall as he bagged a victory in race two and finished second and sixth to become champion.

Dan Camish (Honda) was third in the final standings behind 38-year-old BMW driver Turkington.

“It just wasn’t my year,” said Turkington. “But we should hold our heads high. It’s been a superb season with some amazing moments.

“I just didn’t have the pace in the wet, I couldn’t do any more,” added the Portadown man.

“Congratulations to Ash, a deserving champion.”

Meanwhile, Chris Smiley from Carrickfergus completed his season with three points-scoring finishes in 13th, 11th and 12th, while teenager Tom Edgar from Belfast had two top-ten results in the Ginetta Junior Championship.
