Congratulations as Ellie McCartney wins bronze at Commonwealth Games: Enniskillen swimmer scoops Team NI's fifth medal at 2026 event
Co Fermanagh swimmer Ellie McCartney has been congratulated after powering her way to a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games.
The Enniskillen native came third in the Women’s 200m Breaststroke, meaning she’s earned a medal at the very first Commonwealth Games in which she’s competed.

The 21-year-old comfortably outperformed her own time in the semi-finals to finished third behind Scotland’s Abgharad Evans, something of a favourite in the Glasgow pool, and Kaylene Corbett of South Africa.
She beat Australia's Ella Ramsay by 0.16 seconds.
Ellie won gold at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2023 and scooped the European Under-23 championships last year, but her Commonwealth bronze marks her first medal at a senior international contest level.
It’s Team NI’s third medal for swimmers and fifth overall in this year’s games.
The interim chief executive officer of the province’s governing body and funder, Sport NI, passed on his congratulations to the Co Fermanagh athlete.
Said Richard Archibald: “A double Commonwealth Youth Games champion, European Under-23 champion and now a Commonwealth medallist – we can’t wait to see what the future holds for Ellie.
“We are proud to have played a small role in her journey to success through our National Lottery funded athlete award and sports institute.”
Sport NI has been supporting both Team NI and Swim Ulster through lottery funding.
Since 1998, Swim Ulster has received more than £4.1 million of National Lottery funding to grow the sport and support the clubs, coaches and programmes that give young athletes in Northern Ireland the chance to progress.
