Ireland's qualification hopes in their own hands after securing first World Cup win since 1978
Ireland can book their place in the second round of the Men’s Hockey World Cup with a draw or victory against Spain on Thursday.
After suffering a defeat to a strong Australia side in the opening pool game, Ireland responded in fine style to clinch a 4-1 victory against South Africa on Tuesday.

The victory – which was Ireland men’s first on the World Cup stage since 1978 – ensured they remain within the hunt for a top two finish in Pool C, with a draw against Spain on Thursday enough to see the side progress to the second phase of the tournament.
The Spaniards have beaten South Africa 3-1 and then lost 1-0 against the Aussies so far.
The two countries clash at the Belfius Hockey Arena in Wavre, Belgium at 4pm (BST) on Thursday.
“We sat down and had an honest conversation at the start of the tournament and said we wanted to go into the Spain game having something to play for, and that is very much the case. So we're looking forward to that opportunity,” Ireland captain Kyle Marshall told BBC Sport NI after the victory against South Africa.
“They’re a side we know pretty well, so looking forward to what should be an exciting game.”
Meanwhile, Ireland women know they will more than likely need to upset hosts Belgium if they are also to progress.
After starting with a 3-2 loss to Spain, they were victors by the same scoreline against New Zealand to set-up the final pool game against the Belgians on Thursday. It starts at 7.30pm (BST).
