Kate O'Connor headlines six-strong Northern Ireland team for Commonwealth Games

World outdoor silver medallist Kate O’Connor will headline Northern Ireland’s athletics team at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 25-year-old heptathlete, who claimed silver at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo last year – setting a new Irish record of 6.714 points and five personal bests – is set for her third Commonwealth Games appearance after winning silver in Birmingham four years ago.

Newry-born O’Connor has continued to build on that momentum, competing at the 2024 Olympics in Paris to become Ireland’s first ever Olympic heptathlete before collecting four medals in 2025, including gold at the World University Games and bronze at the European Indoor Championships.

She will be joined in the multi-event ranks by Anna McCauley, who returns for her second Games after finishing sixth in the heptathlon in Birmingham.

Last year, McCauley finished second in the UK Athletics Championship heptathlon. She also became just the second Irish heptathlete to break the 6000 points barrier at the Mehrkampf meeting in Switzerland.

Middle-distance runner Nick Griggs, winner of the Irish senior title in March, has earned his first Commonwealth Games selection alongside fellow debutants Callum Morgan and James Gormley.

Griggs is expected to compete in either the 5000m or the mile, with Morgan also selected for the 5000m and Gormley set to race in the mile.

Para athlete Eva Walsh Dann completes the line-up, returning for her second Commonwealth Games where she will compete in the 100m and long jump.

Team NI won two silver medals on the track in Birmingham four years ago and hopes will be high of more success in Glasgow.
