Rory McIlroy off the pace in Ohio going into final day

Matt Kuchar holds a three-way share of the lead heading into the final round at the Memorial Tournament but Rory McIlroy remains off the pace in Ohio.

Kuchar, the joint-leader after round two, was one over par after 10 holes before storming back into contention with birdies on 11, 13, 14 and 15 to move into a first-place tie with Emiliano Grillo at 15 under.

Rain temporarily suspended play at around 5pm local time with just eight players left on the course and Grillo’s double bogey on 17 allowed Kuchar the chance to claim an outright lead on Sunday.

The 2013 winner, though, dropped a shot on the 18th on his way to a round of 70 and joins fellow Americans Gary Woodland and William McGirt at the top of the leaderboard on 14 under.

McIlroy, who started the third round five shots off the leaders, managed five birdies through the first 15 holes but ended the day at just nine under par.

Having already dropped shots at two of the four par fives, McIlroy added another bogey at the last for a round of 70 to leave himself plenty to do on Sunday.

World number one Jason Day looked in great shape until he doubled-bogeyed the last to leave himself three shots off the lead while Jordan Spieth is way off the pace at four under par.

Scotland’s Russell Knox carded a round of 68 and is four under for the tournament while England’s Luke Donald is two over after posting a disappointing 78.
