Bangor crowned Ulster champions and now chase domestic treble

Bangor secured the Ulster Junior crown last night when they secured the five match points required to leave them uncatchable at the top of the Kukri Qualifying League One table.

Going into Thursday night’s game against Ballyclare at Upritchard Park, Bangor were a point ahead of defending champions, Instonians.

A try scoring bonus point win would have taken them six points clear and the Seasiders duly delivered in a 36-14 win.

They now go through to the All Ireland Round Robin qualifying series against the other three Provincial winners, Westport (Connacht), Enniscorthy (Leinster) and Clonmel (Munster).

The winners will be promoted to the All Ireland Senior League with the runners-up facing a play-off against the second from bottom side in Ulster Bank Division 2C.

But first Bangor will turn their attentions to the Powerade UIster Towns’ Cup final on Easter Monday.

Having already won the Millar, McCall, Wylie Ulster Junior Cup and now secured the league title, Bangor are looking to achieve what would be a rare treble in ulster domestic rugby.

Bangor face Enniskillen on Monday at Kingspan Stadium (2.30pm).

The Fermanagh side may play in Kukri Section Two, but they accounted for Clogher Valley in the semi-finals and the Seasiders will certainly not be underestimating them.

After Monday, Bangor will turn their attentions to the AIL Round-Robin series although they face a tough assignment having two away games.

They open at home against Westport on April 2, before a trip to Enniscorthy on April 9 and an longer trek to Clonmel on April 16.
