Ulster squad in fair state of health ahead of Oyonnax Euro tie

Ulster remained hopeful that fullback Louis Ludik and number eight Nick Williams would be given the all clear ahead of team selection on Friday to face Oyonnax in the final Pool One game of the European Champions Cup on Saturday at Kingspan Stadium.

Williams was going through the usual concussion protocols ahead of a return to play while Ludik was hopeful of a groin strain clearing.

Ulster assistant coach, Neil Doak said: “We are hopeful Nick will be okay and available for selection.

“Louis still has a bit of an issue and has to do some sideways movements and wait and see how things settle or how he reacts.”

Prop Wiehahn Herbst is doubtful with a foot injury to face the Top 14 side in a game Ulster must take a full five match points from if they are to give themselves a chance of making the quarter-finals.

There were also hopes that backrow forward Chris Henry could return having suffered a shoulder injury away to Oyonnax two weeks ago.

Doak confirmed that Darren Cave was in the mix for selection and if Ludik was fit it could open the door for Cave to team up with fellow Irish international centre Jared Payne in the midfield. Payne played at fullback last week against Saracens
