Video diary: Tough watch at The Masters as Rory McIlroy toils on moving day at Augusta National

Rory McIlroy will need to put his Saturday frustrations to bed if he is to retain his Masters crown at Augusta National on Sunday

Rory McIlroy endured a frustrating third round at The Masters as he surrendered his six-shot lead at the top of the leaderboard.

While the chasing pack - including two-time champion Scottie Scheffler, who shot a seven-under-par 65 - were recording low numbers on moving day, the defending champion found himself stuck in second gear and unable to post the scores he enjoyed on days one and two at Augusta National.

Instead, he carded a one-over-par round of 73 which keeps him in Sunday’s final group. But he’s not alone at the top of the standings, with Cam Young joining him on 11-under after he posted a third-round score of seven-under.

On Saturday morning, many believed a second green jackett was almost guaranteed for the 36-year-old. However, that’s all changed, with this year’s tournament up for grabs all of a sudden following McIlroy’s troubles on day three.

And there’s many keen to make the most of the Holywood man’s failure to put the foot on the gas on Saturday. Sam Burns (-10), Shane Lowry (-9), Jason Day, Justin Rose (both -8) and Scheffler (-7) will no doubt all fancy their chances of being crowned 2026 Masters champion.

McIlroy resumes battle for the green jacket at 2.55pm (7.25pm BST) in the company of Young.

Here, Mark McMahon shares his thoughts on where it went wrong for McIlroy on Saturday afternoon.
