Walker Cup star Cormac Sharvin turns professional

The talented 23-year-old joins the professional ranks after a distinguished amateur career, which saw him rise as high as No. 14 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, as well as win the Irish Amateur Close Championship, the prestigious 2015 English Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship and the BUCS Student Tour Grand Final.

To cap off his amateur career, he represented Great Britain and Ireland in the 2015 Walker Cup, posting a perfect winning record through his three matches.

Cormac, who has signed with IMG, is no stranger to the professional circuit, and already featured in the NI Open on the Challenge Tour in 2014.

“I am really excited to be turning professional and to announce my first event will be the 2016 Oates Vic Open,” said Cormac.

“I have heard the tournament has supported younger players in the past and I am hopeful that I can live up to the tournaments tagline of ‘where stars are born.”

Meanwhile, the four-man Ireland team for this month’s European Nations Cup in Spain includes Walker Cup star Jack Hume.

​Hume, who is the highest ranked Irish player in the world, came within two shots of victory at last week’s Guateng North Amateur in South Africa thanks to a final round 65.

Last year the Naas ace was tied fifth in the individual event at La Reserva, which is the host venue again for this year’s European Nations Cup from 24-27 February.
