Wrestling festival brings clubs together in Enniskillen

Erne Wrestling Club along with Omagh wrestling hosted the third annual St Patrick's Festival of Wrestling with great support from the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council from March 18-20.

The Fermanagh Lakeland Forum was the venue for a weekend of fun for people of all ages. Clubs from the Republic of Ireland including Dublin, Rosscommon, Cavan and Drogheda took part alongside clubs from Belfast, Lisburn, Carrickfergus, and Derry/Londonderry came together through the sport of Olympic Freestyle Wrestling.

Boys and girls from the age of five through 50 took part in a fun filled event to introduce and promote this worldwide sport. Experienced and newcomers to the sport played and learned together highlighting the totally inclusive nature of the sport.

On Saturday, “Best Wrestler” awards supplied and sponsored by Belleek Pottery, KN Networks and Enniskillen.com.co.uk were presented to three athletes who stood out to clubs and coaches for their very good efforts.

Ben from Waterside Sharks, Nicola from Dublin and Amina from Rosscommon took the awards.

For many people, this was their first experience in the sport and all indicated that it was an excellent event

As a festival, free and open to the public to view, many people were able to witness this ancient and world-wide sport for the first time.

The clubs also thank the many local businesses who stepped up to support this fantastic event. And thanks to Christopher Eccles Photography for some truly memorable pictures.

Erne Wrestling Club and Omagh Wrestling, working together, are the only wrestling clubs in the Fermanagh/Tyrone area. A base sport for many other activities to enhance speed, balance, agility and self responsibility.

The clubs are open to people from five years up to 60+ to explore this activity for fun and fitness or to prepare to compete at the highest levels. Erne Wrestling Club has started what is believed to be the very first secondary schools program in all of GB or Ireland.
