Performers are standing up for integrated education

Northern Ireland's best known entertainers will be taking to the stage at the Ulster Hall in support of integrated education.

The Stand Up For Integrated Education on September 10 will feature a host of top comedians along with “TV mentalist” David Meade.

According to organisers, the Integrated Education Fund, the line-up promises “an unforgettable show with plenty of laughs and mind-reading”.

Best known as “Da” in the TV show Give My Head Peace - actor, writer and stand-up Tim McGarry will be joined by fellow Blame Game comedian and presenter Colin Murphy.

Actress Wendy Watson who launched her comedy career in 2004 and has already been seen on TV shows such as Coupling and The IT Crowd will also be taking to the stage, as will touring comedian Neil Dougan.

One of the best established acts on the Irish comedy circuit apart from his own popular solo show, Neil has rose to fame supporting acts such as Patrick Kielty, Tommy Tiernan and Roy Walker with writing credits including It’s not Brazil it’s Northern Ireland, PK Tonight and The McKeever Show.

David Meade said: “I really believe that if we all put our minds to it we could move Northern Ireland forward and build a truly united community. And bringing loads of people together to enjoy a night out is a great way to grow support for integrated education. “Stand Up for Integrated Education” promises to be a fantastic show for a fantastic cause.”

Tim McGarry added: “I don’t know why I’m here as I don’t like kids and I’m not even getting paid. However if it’s another opportunity to stand up at the Ulster Hall and rant about what’s ridiculous about Northern Ireland – and heaven knows, a divided education system is right up there – then I’m in.”

With more guests set to be revealed over the summer organisers have stressed that tickets are limited for the special night of comedy, telepathy and philanthropy.

IEF Chief Executive Tina Merron said: “It’s going to be a really good night out with star performers and guaranteed laughter and it’s already attracting a lot of interest.”
