WATCH: New 'moving' George Best film set to air on BBC

George Best: All By Himself, which is set to air on BBC One Northern Ireland on May 29 (8.30pm), tells the life story of the legendary Northern Ireland and Manchester United star who is still regarded as one of the greatest sportsmen of all time.

Famously called the ‘best player in the world’ by the legendary Pelé, Best remains one of the most naturally gifted footballers the world has ever seen.

He galvanised United’s five-year recovery from the tragedy of the Munich air disaster in 1958 and his skill inspired the the Old Trafford outfit to win league titles and the European Cup, even though he was little more than a teenager.

Tragically, his career in the upper echelons of sport was over before he turned 29, the result of his bruising battle with alcoholism and the pressures of fame.

With George Best: All By Myself, produced John Battsek and director Daniel Gordon has been described as a moving portrait of the boy from the Cregagh Estate who went on to become a household name for his life on and off the pitch.

This film documentary features new insights into one of football’s greatest players, with never-before-seen interviews with his close family, including Angie Best and Ani Rinchen Khandro, as well as former footballers and friends Bobby McAlinden, Bill McMurdo and former NI and United 'keeper Harry Gregg.
