15% of people in Belfast rely on Black Friday for major purchases they couldn’t otherwise afford
Black Friday is setting the tone for a new kind of shopping season, as more and more people in Belfast are embracing self-love and using the sales period to treat themselves to items they can’t otherwise afford.
New research from La Redoute has revealed that shoppers are increasingly using the November sales to splash out on themselves, with 17M UK shoppers (34% of Brits who shop on Black Friday) admitting that they head straight to the sales to bag a personal treat at a discount.

Festive generosity has fallen by the wayside: only 8% of shoppers plan on using this year’s sales to buy exclusively for others, as most see Black Friday as an opportunity to indulge guilt-free.
In fact, over a quarter (27%) admit it’s their annual chance to treat themselves, while 15% say the discounts are their only sure way to afford big-ticket buys like furniture or appliances.
And the self-love shopping trend is only growing, as four in 10 (40%) plan on prioritising themselves when this year’s sales start, filling their baskets with more personal treats than presents.
When it comes to shopping habits, technology and electronics top the list of self-treats, with almost six in 10 (59%) saying that gadgets are their must-have purchase this year. Fashion follows closely behind, with nearly two in five (38%) planning a wardrobe update during the sales.
Homeware is also rising in popularity, with more shoppers upgrading their interiors (31%) rather than spending on dining and drinks (14%) or holidays and experiences (11%), as the trend of staying inside and cosying up the home takes hold this winter.
To celebrate the rise of self-gifting, La Redoute has launched an unmissable Black Friday sale, offering shoppers up to 50% off everything sitewide. Whether you’re refreshing your winter wardrobe, upgrading your interiors or investing smartly in big-ticket items, it’s the perfect excuse to put yourself first this November.
From effortlessly chic décor and sumptuously soft bedlinens to trend-led coats and cosy knitwear, shoppers can bag timeless Parisian-inspired pieces for less.
Plus, La Redoute is home to many big-name brands like Levi’s, Adidas and Puma, making it the perfect one-stop shop for self-treats.
Sarah Link, Marketing Director at La Redoute, said: “Black Friday used to be all about getting Christmas wrapped up early, but more and more people are putting themselves first instead. And honestly, why not? Everyone deserves a little indulgence and to treat themselves, guilt-free.
“With our range of homewares, fashion and big-name brands at incredible prices, our Black Friday sale will help to brighten the dark winter days and give shoppers permission to treat themselves.”
