Belfast ranks in the mid-to-higher range for UK nightlife costs, driven by drink prices and overall hospitality spending
A night out in the UK isn’t what it used to be. What once felt like a casual evening of drinks, dinner and a taxi home can now quietly spiral into a triple-digit expense, depending on where you are. From soaring pint prices to eye-watering taxi fares, the cost of socialising varies dramatically across the country, and in some cities, it’s the hidden costs that push the bill over the edge.
A new study by BestWallClock Archive analysed 60 UK cities to uncover where a night out costs the most. Using data from Numbeo and Expatistan, the study compared four key expenses: the average price of a local pint, a restaurant meal, a 5km taxi ride, and a cocktail in the city centre. Each metric was equally weighted to create an overall score out of 100, ranking cities from most to least expensive for nightlife.

Belfast sits in the middle-to-upper tier of UK cities for nightlife costs, reflecting a pricing structure where food and drink tend to sit above many regional averages, even if transport costs remain more moderate than the most expensive locations.
Restaurant prices in Belfast are generally mid-to-high compared with other UK cities, while beer and cocktail costs contribute significantly to overall evening spending. Drink pricing in particular plays a noticeable role in pushing totals upward, especially in popular nightlife areas where demand is concentrated. Taxi fares for short journeys are typically more moderate, meaning transport is less of a driver compared with cities higher up the rankings.
When compared with top-tier cities such as London, Oxford and Winchester, Belfast is generally less extreme overall, particularly in transport pricing and the highest-end drink costs. However, it remains more expensive than lower-cost cities like York or Southampton, where both hospitality and transport costs tend to sit closer to the national average, keeping Belfast positioned in the upper-middle portion of the rankings.
At the opposite end of the scale, Preston is ranked as the most affordable city for a night out, offering some of the lowest overall prices across all categories. Sunderland, Kingston upon Hull and Doncaster also rank among the cheapest, with particularly low beer prices and taxi fares helping keep total nightlife costs down.
