Belfast's free Halloween monster trail shows family fun need not mean buying new

Nine giant monsters are due to appear above Belfast's city-centre streets this half-term, giving families a free Halloween adventure without the cost of admission. Kidora, a UK parent-to-parent marketplace for baby and children's items, says the same make-the-most-of-what-you-have thinking can help parents save on costumes, toys and other seasonal purchases.

Belfast One's Monsters Take Over trail runs from Monday 26 October to Sunday 1 November 2026. Families can use a downloadable map to find nine inflatable characters dotted around familiar shopping streets, including the area between CastleCourt and Victoria Square. The trail is listed as free by Belfast City Council and can be explored at a family's own pace.

There are more activities planned for the Halloween weekend. Belfast One is advertising crafts, storytelling, face painting and a disco at 2 Royal Avenue on 30 and 31 October. Parents should check individual activity times, availability and any booking arrangements before travelling.

For families juggling half-term outings and the Christmas run-up, a free local activity can leave more of the household budget for essentials. It also creates an opportunity to ask whether a new costume or accessory is really necessary for one afternoon.

A dressing-up cape borrowed from a sibling, a clean preloved outfit in the right size or a costume put together from clothes already at home can be just as enjoyable. Warm layers and suitable footwear are important for an outdoor city-centre trail, particularly in changeable autumn weather.

Parents considering purchases can compare preloved children's coats, wellies, dressing-up clothes, books and toys with new alternatives. Some parents also sell unwanted gifts or items their children have barely used. A clear photograph, an accurate description and confirmation that all pieces are included matter more than a claim that an item is a bargain.

Kidora's native iPhone and Android apps let families browse new, unused and preloved baby and children's items listed by other UK parents. Prices and availability depend on individual sellers. Some listings are free, with local collection only; other items may offer collection or delivery where the seller's arrangements and destination permit. Any applicable buyer charges, including Buyer Protection, are shown before checkout.

Safety should come first. Check costume materials and labels, avoid unsafe cords or loose parts, and look for age guidance and any product recalls. Not every second-hand baby product is suitable for reuse, particularly safety-critical equipment whose history is unknown.

After Halloween, families can pass on good-condition costumes and outgrown clothes instead of keeping them in a cupboard. Kidora charges sellers no seller fee, and its AI-assisted listing tool suggests details from an uploaded photograph while leaving the seller responsible for reviewing the description and setting the price.

The trail and Halloween activities are organised by Belfast One, independently of Kidora. The broader lesson is that enjoyable family traditions do not have to depend on buying everything brand new.
