DUP MLA Pam Cameron has said delays in the justice system are a “shocking indictment” following developments in the case of Ian McCollum.

Pam Cameron said:

“My thoughts remain with the McCollum family following this deeply tragic case. Ian McCollum was a much-loved husband, father and family man whose loss is still felt every day.

The entry of guilty pleas will at least spare the family the additional trauma of a contested trial. However, the fact it has taken over four years to reach this point is a shocking indictment on our justice system.

I have raised the family’s concerns directly with the Public Prosecution Service, the Justice Minister and representatives of the Criminal Bar. The delays and uncertainty they have faced have only added to their suffering.

It is vital that the sentencing hearing at the end of June now proceeds without further delay.

Families deserve timely justice. While wider industrial action issues remain, every effort must now be made to ensure cases like this are brought to a proper and timely conclusion.”
