The decade spanning 1990 to 2000 was an incredible 10 years in Northern Ireland's history, leading us toward peace. But alongside the politics, there was another story: the rave revolution exploded across NI, and maybe—just maybe—it paved its own path to peace.
Come watch BPM tell a unique story of how the rave generation lost it all on the dance floor, set against the backdrop of a changing political landscape.
Set right inside the BPM club, you’ll get up close with the performers. (Don't worry, there's no forced audience participation—but if you want to have a boogie, you are more than welcome!)
BELFAST — Step out of the conflict and into the sweat-soaked sanctuary of the underground. OTR and acclaimed choreographer Eileen McClory present BPM, a visceral collision of contemporary dance and a thumping DJ set that resurrects the era-defining spirit of the acid house generation.
At the height of the Troubles, the dance floor offered a radical alternative to the streets. It was a neutral ground where political and religious divisions dissolved into a sea of thumping basslines. BPM isn’t just a show; it’s a full-scale immersive nightclub experience that honours the generation that danced their way to peace..
The Experience …
Forget the traditional theatre seat. Attendees are invited to step directly into the BPM Club, a standing-only environment where the boundary between cast and audience vanishes. Featuring high-octane choreography and a soundtrack of old-school bangers, this is a ritual of rebellion and pure human connection.
If you spent your nights at The Arena, LUSH, Sugar Sweet, or The Gweedore, this is your homecoming.
"BPM captures that lightning-in-a-bottle moment when the music was louder than the noise outside. This is a tribute to the rave generation—before phones, before social media—who came purely to dance, to sweat, and to lose themselves in the darkness. It’s physical, it’s loud, and it’s a celebration of those unforgettable nights where the only thing that mattered was the beat." — Eileen McClory, Choreographer/Director
Caoileann Curry-Thompson, Arts Development Officer for Drama and Dance, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, commented, “The Arts Council of Northern Ireland is thrilled to support this innovative, immersive dance production from acclaimed Belfast choreographer, Eileen McClory, thanks to the National Lottery players. It is terrific that this production will be presented in Belfast, Armagh and Derry~Londonderry, helping to diversify audiences, inspire and bring great art to everyone.”
Supported by: Arts Council Northern Ireland, Belfast City Council and Queens University Belfast, The Playhouse Derry and Armagh Marketplace Theatre.
